Salvatore Quasimodo (Modica 1901-Naples 1968), among the greatest poets of the 20th century, was also a draughtsman: in fact, the public will be able to see from December 6, 2024, at the Riso Regional Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Palermo, on the occasion of the exhibition Oltre Quasimodo. The 27 gouaches. I already knew everything, and I wanted to sin, the 27 gouaches, or tempera drawings, made by the Sicilian poet, the Nobel laureate’s only foray into the world of visual arts. The exhibition brings together, more than 30 years after the only review, the 27 works that had been kept in the vault of a German bank for 50 years.
Salvatore Quasimodo was fascinated by the visual arts but his only experiment in the field was precisely the series of 27 gouaches executed in 1953 almost by accident. In 1993 the poet’s son, Alessandro Quasimodo, brought them together in a book, associating them with as many of his father’s poems. Some distance from the only Roman exhibition in 1994, the heirs of Alberto Lùcia, a friend of the poet, granted the loan of the collection for this exhibition.
