Salerno welcomes 100 shots by Sukita dedicated to David Bowie

Stardust Bowie by Sukita is the exhibition that Palazzo Fruscione in Salerno is hosting from January 4 to February 27, 2020.

The exhibition spaces of Palazzo Fruscione in Salerno will host, from Jan. 4 to Feb. 27, 2020, the Stardust Bowie by Sukita exhibition dedicated to the 40-year professional and personal relationship between David Bowie and Japanese master photographer Masayoshi Sukita.

More than one hundred photographs, some of them presented as national premieres, will trace their collaborative relationship, which began in 1972, when the photographer arrived in London to capture Marc Bolan and T-Rex and, although he did not know David Bowie, decided to go to one of his concerts because he was attracted by the poster promoting it: here David Bowie was depicted with one leg raised, against a black background.

Sukita was able to meet Bowie in person with the help of his friend and stylist Yasuko Takahashi. The latter showed a portfolio with Sukita’s work, at the time consisting mostly of advertising campaigns and fashion photography, to Bowie’s then manager and arranged a photo shoot for him. Bowie was impressed by Sukita’s style: they shared a desire for continuous artistic research. In 1973 Sukita had the opportunity to portray Bowie again, both in the United States and during his first tour of Japan, but the most significant meeting occurred in 1977, when the singer returned to Tokyo for the promotion of Iggy Pop’s album The Idiot, which he had produced. Sukita followed the two for the promotional press conference and concerts, and it was on that occasion that the two posed for the photographer. He shot six rolls of film and also took the photograph that would become the famous Heroes album cover, one of the most iconic shots in music history. Over the course of the years, Bowie and Sukita worked together on almost every occasion when the former was in Japan or when the photographer was in the United States, but the studio photo shoots were also followed by more intimate and personal photo sessions, such as the one taken in Kyoto in 1980.

The exhibition is organized by the Cultural Association Tempi Moderni, with the collaboration of SCABEC Regione Campania, and is curated by ONO contemporary art; the event is sponsored under the patronage of the City of Salerno and the Department of Political and Social Studies of the University of Salerno.
