Sacred Indices: in Bologna, Sissi's new site-specific project on human anatomy

From April 30 to May 15, 2022, the LabOratorio degli Angeli in Bologna will welcome the new site-specific project by Sissi (Bologna, 1977) entitled Sacri Indici; the exhibition curated by Leonardo Regano and realized in collaboration with Galleria d’Arte Maggiore g.a.m. is part of the spring edition of ART CITY Bologna.

On public display for the first time is a large monumental paper, a ’sacred’ anatomy that the artist created especially for the exhibition and that will be in dialogue with the exhibition space. The focus on thebody and research intohuman anatomy, which has always been at the center of Sissi’s production, returns again for this exhibition.

A selection of eight large works on paper that belong to the Index cycle will punctuate the exhibition space of the historic restoration workshop and transform it into a pathway that will actualize its original nature as a place of worship. These eight bodies, in their visionary and emotional particularities, reveal the duality of their nature, carnal and mystical. The visitor will therefore be guided and forced into a passage to the center of the room where the artist will present the new large Index made the Bologna exhibition project. On the walls of the former Oratory, the artist will display a selection of related works, again on paper but in a smaller format as opposed to the monumental vision of the center of the space.

The exhibition will also be an opportunity to display Anatomie Parallele, a book-work that brings together Sissi’s studies of the body, in whose plates the artist investigates the human figure and its internal organs with a scientific method, in a correspondence between interiority and emotionality that was later translated into the large loose papers on display in the restoration workshop.
