On view through May 8 at MAXXI is the exhibition Supernova, a reflection by Chinese artist Cao Fei (Canton, 1978) on the speed of change, the relationship between tradition and the future. A line that spans thousands of years and takes us into the next millennium.
Interaction between reality and fantasy, real and virtual, memory and future characterize the exhibition, dedicated to a leading figure on the international scene. The exhibition, curated by Hou Hanru and Monia Trombetta, presents, along with two crucial films by the artist, Haze and Fog (2013) and La Town (2014), works that have been appreciated by international audiences, his latest works: the film Nova (2019 ), a science fiction film that tells the timeless story of Hongxia, the neighborhood in which Cao Fei lives, reinvented and set in the future; the virtual reality work The Eternal Wave (2020) produced in collaboration with Acute Art, which continues the journey begun by the artist with his previous digital works, in which he continues anexploration of the virtual, reality, and self-perception with technology; and Isle of Instability (2020) commissioned by Audemars Piguet Contemporary, the latest creation made by the artist in his Singapore home, in which he explores the psychological repercussions of the pandemic and isolation, a work that explores the social realities of everyday life in this period.
The works are presented at MAXXI as part of an articulated installation journey that starts from the real, and sometimes private, places in the artist’s life, contemporary China, her neighborhood, her studio, and her home, and looks into an ominous and surreal virtual future.
