Rome, at the Lombardi Gallery an exhibition on Giulio Turcato

Rome's Galleria Lombardi is dedicating an exhibition to Giulio Turcato, one of the leading Italian artists of the second half of the 20th century. Entitled "Painting Becomes Poetry," it opens from Oct. 29 to Nov. 26, 2022.

Galleria Lombardi in Rome is dedicating an exhibition to Giulio Turcato (Mantua, 1912 - Rome, 1995), one of the most relevant Italian artists of the 20th century: from October 29 to November 26, 2022, the Roman gallery in fact opens the exhibition La pittura si fa poesia, curated by Lorenzo Lombardi. Among the major artists of the post-World War II period, Turcato draws on color as the main element of his painting. Unexpected chromatic encounters give life to large backgrounds in which the signs oscillate in a dynamic sense, letting new spatial visions emerge where the artist sublimates and confuses the natural dimension with abstract vision.

Experimentation with materials, sand, glues and fluorescent powders with iridescent effects contribute to the sense of evocation and glow of color that, in Turcato’s works, is capable of generating a new expression of reality. In a writing dated 1985 entitled “La Dogana,” Turcato expressed himself in these terms about the importance of color, which in his view is superior to drawing and form: “I think that modern painting must hinge on color as an emotional and psychological expression of the present.”

The exhibition intends to account for these experiments by displaying some works such as Wandering Forms, Urban Landscape, exhibited at the Michetti Prize in 1988, Nocturnal Atmospheric, Iridescent Composition and to the Underwater in which the artist draws on perceptual and poetic suggestions, capable of revealing that vital essence of color. The exhibition thus traces, through some 20 works, Turcato’s path from the 1950s to the 1980s.

The exhibition is accompanied by a catalog with texts by the curator and Alberto Dambruoso, Sibilla Panerai and Ilaria D’Ambrosi. Open Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., for info 06 31073928, 333 2307817, www.gallerialombardi.com.
