Behind one of the most traditional games ever, considered today a simple pastime for children, there is actually a centuries-old history and timeless symbolic meanings. The Goose Game, the most classic of path games, is the protagonist of the new exhibition hosted from Oct. 6 to Dec. 30, 2018 at the Casina di Raffaello, Art and Creativity Space of Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Persona, Scuola e Comunità Solidale, managed in collaboration with Zétema Progetto Cultura.
The exhibition “The Goose Game. History and meaning of a timeless game” aims to investigate the origins and meaning of a pastime that is now famous all over the world, but was born in Italy itself at the end of the 16th century. Making use of the scientific collaboration of art historian Patrizia Giamminuti, who in 2016, with a research on the subject, won the Gaetano Cozzi Prize for essays on the history of the game(Fondazione Benetton Studi Ricerche), an itinerary is proposed that, through theexhibition of reproductions of ancient boards, preserved in the collections of some of the world’s most famous museums, such as the British Museum in London, but also through games and educational panels, illustrates the history and meaning of the Goose Game, starting with the oldest evidence and the symbolic meaning of the goose. Among the objects on display, there will also be a book entirely dedicated to this pastime, thanks to Casina di Raffaello’s collaboration with theIstituzione Biblioteche di Roma, in particular with the Biblioteca Centrale Ragazzi.
A section of the exhibition is then dedicated to contemporary reinterpretations, which continue to respect the main scheme and rules of the traditional game, with some variations, as in the case of artist Maria Lai’s The Game of Goose Flight, which has also become apermanent installation at the Sabina Oil Museum, or the Goose Game created by Studiolabo and illustrated by Stefano Marra, the communication object-icon of the 2017 edition of Milan ’s Brera Design District and inspired by the teaching of Bruno Munari: “Designing is a game, playing a project.”
Selected hand-drawn and hand-colored boards and a boxed game designed and made by architect Stefano Ferrante, a great lover of goose games, will complete the exhibition itinerary, and for the occasion he will provide children participating in the workshops with an original board, designed by him. In fact, the exhibition will be accompanied by the Gioca con l’Oca (Play with the Goose) workshop, intended for Primary and Secondary School students and the public of Casina di Raffaello, during which children will be able to make a personalized game board complete with pawns and dice.
