Rome, at Rosso20sette Art Gallery the first solo exhibition of street artist Laika

From March 11 to April 22, 2023, Rosso20sette Art Gallery contemporary art in Rome presents Art Is (Not) A Game, the first solo exhibition of Italian street artist Laika.

Opening on Saturday, March 11 at 6 p.m. at the Rosso20sette Art Gallery contemporary art in Rome will be the first solo exhibition of street artist Laika entitled Art Is (Not) A Game, curated by Tiziana Cino and Stefano Ferraro and accompanied by a text by Edoardo Marcenaro.

Laika, who likes to call herself a “Roman attacker,” has been an active artist since 2019, with a name homage to the little dog Laika, the first living being in space. There is also a reference to Leica, the famous camera. The choice of Laika as a stage name is related to the concept of wanting to “aim for space,” of never setting limits on oneself. Anonymity, in fact, grants her greater freedom of expression and diverts attention away from aspects of her personal life, making us focus solely and exclusively on her messages.

Art is (not) a game traces her “art without filters” with a series of works that have become iconic. Among them: The Embrace, the work dedicated to Patrick Zaki and Giulio Regeni, The Tears of Kabul, dedicated to Gino Strada, Sweet Black Angel to Angela Davis , and then the No Eyez On Me Project series with portraits of Greta Thunberg (Barbie Girl) and Matteo Salvini (Baywatch).

Also embellishing the exhibition will be the artist’s more political works, true manifestos: from Iustitia, dedicated to Mimmo Lucano, to Es Ley, on the legalization of abortion in Argentina, to Mir, a call for peace and disarmament. Also, the work made on the Balkan route dedicated to migrants Life Is Not A Game - from which Antonio Valerio Spera ’s film of the same name, in which Laika stars, also takes its title.

Not only paper and canvases, however. In fact, the installation Futuro, consisting of an optometric table made on enameled wood, first shown in 2021 in Frankfurt, will also be on display, with the letters getting smaller and smaller, putting the eyesight to the test in reading a single word: “FUTURE.”

Laika is also currently on display at the group show Jago, Banksy, TVboy and other countercultural stories at Palazzo Albergati (Bologna).

Her activity was the subject of a docufilm entitled “LIFE IS (NOT) A GAME” directed by Antonio Valerio Spera, which was presented at the 17th Roma Cinema Fest in the Freestyle section and earned her a Silver Ribbon as “Protagonist of the Year 2023.”

Art Is (Not) A Game is her first solo exhibition and will be on view until April 22, 2023.
