Rome, at Palazzo delle Esposizioni large exhibition for the centenary of Carla Accardi's birth

At Rome's Palazzo delle Esposizioni, the exhibition on Carla Accardi from March 6 to June 9 brings together works ranging in time from the 1960s to 2000. The centenary will feature events dedicated to the artist.

From Wednesday, March 6, until June 9, 2024, the Carla Accardi exhibition celebrating the centenary of the birth of Carla Accardi (Trapani, 1924 - Rome, 2014), curated by Daniela Lancioni and Paola Bonanifigura, opens to the public at the Palazzo delle Esposizioni in Rome. The initiative, realized in collaboration with Archivio Accardi Sanfilippo and with the support of the Silvano Toti Foundation, is conceived, produced and organized by Azienda Speciale Palaexpo.

The exhibition will consist of about one hundred creations ranging from the initial phase related to the Forma group to experiments with black and white, color and sicofoil. The itinerary includes the environments of the 1960s and 2000s, through the painting of the 1980s and the reconstruction of the personal room at the 1988 Venice Biennale, to the bold reinterpretations of the 1990s and 2000s. His contribution to the contemporary influenced new artistic approaches, from abstractionism to informal art, from ambient art to dematerialized art, to the lively joie de vivre embodied in the 1980s and the great diptychs and triptychs of the 1990s and 2000s. The exhibition itinerary has been designed to highlight above all certain aspects of Carla Accardi’s work: her predilection for contrasts, which the artist emphasized and then destined them for a form of integration, together with her identity choice of expressing herself through the sign and the constant reinvention or reinterpretation of it, in order to constantly explore new interactions with space and surface, enriched with meanings. The exhibition catalog, published by Quodlibet, is enriched by an extensive anthology of critical literature on Carla Accardi’s work.

The exhibition is also part of a series of talk events, meetings and poetry readings named Dedicated to Carla Accardi, which Palazzo delle Esposizioni has dedicated to the woman. On March 8, poets Alessandra Carnaroli, Irene Santori and Sara Ventroni will gather in the exhibition rooms for a tribute to the painter who loved poetry. On April 10, in collaboration with the Department of Humanistic Studies and the Department of Philosophy, Communication and Performing Arts of the University of Roma Tre, a day Un modo altro di essere al mondo will be held. Carla Accardi and Feminism curated by Paola Bonani, Lara Conte, Laura Iamurri, Daniela Lancioni. The day of talks intends to retrace the artist’s engagement with her artistic season from 1970 to 1976 from various disciplinary perspectives, focusing on the relationships between artistic practice and feminism. On April 23, Difference and Repetition, the poetics of Carla Accardi in light of the thought of French philosopher Gilles Deleuze, will be presented. On May 29, the artistic director of Munich’s Haus der Kunst, Andrea Lissoni , and curator Lorenzo Benedetti, who has dedicated several studies and exhibition projects to Carla Accardi, will dialogue about the artist’s work and its connections to international research.
