From Dec. 6 to Jan. 26, 2020 scheduled at the Civic Museum of Zoology is the exhibition Carpe Sidera. The wonder of the sky on the beauty of Rome in which photographs taken by astrophysicist and photographer Gianluca Masi (Frosinone, 1972), astronomer of the Planetarium of Roma Capitale, will be on display.
The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali, with the museum services of Zètema Progetto Cultura. For MIC Card holders, admission to the museum is free.
Admiring the stars from big cities, among artificial lights, is less and less taken for granted, yet the firmament does not fail to offer extraordinary opportunities to do so. The stars provide an important cue for rediscovering and preserving the heritage of the sky. Rome, with its unparalleled archaeological and monumental heritage, represents an ideal place to do so. Therefore, the photographic exhibition aims to bring the wonders of the sky and the monumental charm of the Eternal City closer together: fragments of beauty, collected near that boundary line that is the horizon, where the sky and the Urbe have met for thousands of years.
In Carpe Sidera. The wonder of the sky over the beauty of Rome, the splendor of the night sky, through some of its most spectacular phenomena, lights up on that of monuments and symbols of the Capital: from the Space Station crossing the sky above the Spanish Steps to the Supermoon looming on the horizon of theAltare della Patria, from Venus setting next to the Dome (pictured), to the scratch of light from a satellite over Piazza del Campidoglio.
Gianluca Masi’s goal, as a researcher but also as a passionate science popularizer, is to recover, through the beauty of images, the dialogue between the celestial vault and urban spaces, a starting point for the preservation of that treasure of wonders hidden in the firmament.
During the course of the exhibition there will be a number of talks given by the photographer himself on night photography and the phenomena observed and immortalized in the photographs, with free admission subject to availability.
