From today, December 7, 2017, until April 22, 2018, an exhibition will be held to celebrate the man who is considered the father of modern archaeology-Johann Joachim Winckelmann (1717-1768). Entitled “The Treasury of Antiquities. Winckelmann and the Capitoline Museum in Eighteenth-Century Rome,” the event aims to celebrate two anniversaries: Winckelmann’s birth (which occurred 300 years ago) and his death (250 years will have passed in 2018).
The exhibition, curated by Eloisa Dodero and Claudio Parisi Presicce, is part of European events coordinated by the Winckelmann Gesellschaft in Stendal, theGermanic Archaeological Institute in Rome and the Vatican Museums.
There are two aims of the event: on the one hand, the exhibition aims to offer visitors an account of the crucial years that led, in December 1733, to the establishment of the Capitoline Museum, the first public museum inEurope, intended not only for the preservation but also for the promotion of the “magnificence and splendor of Rome,” and on the other hand, to present Capitoline sculptures in a different light, that is, through the often brilliant insights of the great Winckelmann.
The exhibition is enriched by a selection of 124 works and specially produced multimedia apparatus, all developed in three different venues: the Exhibition Rooms of Palazzo Caffarelli (which house original documents, volumes, drawings, engravings, paintings, and ancient and modern sculptures, able to narrate the early years of the Capitoline Museum’s life), the Left Terrain Rooms of the Palazzo Nuovo (with sculptures that are now preserved in the deposits of the Capitoline Museums and the Centrale Montemartini) and the Museum Rooms of the Palazzo Nuovo (where a tour dedicated to the great German scholar is planned).
The exhibition is promoted by Roma Capitale, Assessorato alla Crescita culturale - Sovrintendenza Capitolina ai Beni Culturali.
