Rome ’s Castel Sant’Angelo is hosting the exhibition Mastroianni. Yesterday, Today, Always, from October 12, 2024 to January 12, 2025. The exhibition, dedicated to the centenary of the birth of Marcello Mastroianni (Fontana Liri, 1924 - Paris, 1996), is an official event of the 19th Rome Film Festival and a must-see for fans of Italian cinema and art photography. The exhibition presents an extraordinary collection of photographs tracing the career and life of one of the greatest protagonists of Italian cinema, a symbol of the Dolce Vita.
Promoted by the Pantheon Institute and the Directorate of National Museums of the City of Rome of the Ministry of Culture, the exhibition is curated by Gian Luca Farinelli, director of the Cineteca di Bologna, with the patronage of the Lazio Region. It is organized by Civita Mostre e Musei in collaboration with the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, the Cineteca di Bologna, the Historical Archives of the Istituto Luce, the SIAE Theater Museum Library, the Fondazione Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia, Rai Teche and with the support of private archives. The exhibition offers a visual journey through the history of Italian cinema through the lens of renowned photographers, who captured both intimate and public moments of the great actor’s life. Featuring 100 photographs to celebrate his 100th birthday, the exhibition aims to explore the most iconic and significant moments in the life of Marcello Mastroianni, a figure who has represented Italian cinema in the world. The images on display will highlight the many facets of the actor, not only through his most famous film roles, but also in his private life, away from the spotlight, seeking to reveal the mechanisms behind the scenes through an engaging and interactive journey. The exhibition is divided into two main themes: the first focuses on highlights from filming and performances; the second, presents an analysis of the man Marcello Mastroianni, delving into his personality and telling his story.
“Castel Sant’Angelo once again confirms itself as a fundamental reference point for the encounter and dialogue between different languages and disciplines, with its exhibitions ranging from photography, art, archaeology and cinema. What we are inaugurating today is a choral project, a collaboration between a plurality of institutions, dedicated to an iconic figure of Italian and international culture, in a place equally symbolic for our heritage,” highlights Massimo Osanna, Director General of Museums.
“The objective of the exhibition ’Yesterday, Today, Always’ is not only to commemorate through photography one of the greatest figures of Italian and world cinema, but to enhance the aspects of his life and art that are not known and what-after 100 years since his passing-he represented for our society and our cultural system. The exhibition is the result of a joint institutional effort aimed at exalting that melancholic naturalness and ironic humanity that wrote the history of Italian culture in the second half of the 20th century and made Italians love him as one of their own. We have always supported initiatives like this,” says Federico Mollicone, chairman of the Culture Committee of the Chamber of Deputies.
“In the country of sacred monsters and histrions, Mastroianni was able to become the most human and charismatic presence, the most international star, cultivating a style in the shadows, without excesses, without abuses, preferring inner inflections. This is also why he cannot be confused with anyone else, nor can he be forgotten. His silhouette so discreet, without unnecessary words, so self-mocking, brought to the whole world an idea of our civilization, our culture, that very few others have been able to offer with the same elegance,” says Gian Luca Farinelli, curator of the exhibition.
