Rome, Alberto Sordi's villa opens its doors to the public for an exhibition celebrating the centenary of his birth

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Alberto Sordi’s birth, which will be celebrated on June 15, 2020, the Rome villa where he lived, located in Piazzale Numa Pompilio, will host an exhibition dedicated to him open from March 7 to June 29, 2020.

Entitled Il Centenario - Alberto Sordi 1920-2020, the exhibition is curated by Alessandro Nicosia, president of C.O.R. - Creare Organizzare Realizzare, together with journalists Gloria Satta and Vincenzo Mollica. Among unpublished documents, photographs, films and various kinds of memorabilia, the exhibition will take visitors to explore the house and learn more about the life and career of “Albertone.” The exhibition continues at the Dioscuri Theater will screen Storia di un italiano, the television program to which Sordi was particularly attached.

The villa, which will open to the public for the first time, was designed in the 1930s by architect Clemente Busiri Vici, and Sordi saw it for the first time in 1954, being so fascinated by it that he bought it a few hours after visiting it.

“A great exhibition to get to know Alberto Sordi even better, whom we all know for his production, but little for what he actually was. There is a section in the exhibition in which we have included some really incredible found material,” says curator Nicosia. “I have tried to respect the environments that remained intact after his death, just as he intended and experienced them. This exhibition allows us to discover a Sordi that goes beyond success and fame and to know stories that were circulating about his private life.”

“It is a fundamental appointment for Rome, but I would say for the whole of Italy,” commented the mayor of Rome, Virginia Raggi. “Alberto Sordi always valued his relationship with the public, which he always thanked because, as he often recounted, as a young man he starved with his friend Federico Fellini. Throughout his life he played the average Roman with delicacy and precision, highlighting its positive and negative aspects. There is not one of us who, seeing one of his films, has not recognized himself at least in some aspect. On the centenary of his birth we must feel him part of our family and nurture the bond. It is a gift for all Romans.” Meanwhile, the exhibition has already registered more than 10,000 reservations from all over Italy.

The exhibition opens daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m., while Friday and Saturday it opens from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The ticket office closes one hour earlier.
