Rome, Accademia di San Luca celebrates Guido Strazza: an exhibition for the artist's 100th birthday

From June 15 to July 29, 2023 , the National Academy of San Luca is hosting the exhibition "Plots and Signs. Guido Strazza." The exhibition presents a selection of works from the important donation the artist made in 2018 to the Accademia.

TheNational Academy of St. Luke in Rome pays tribute to Guido Strazza (Santa Fiora, Grosseto, Italy, 1922), painter National Academician of St. Luke since 1997 and president in 2011-2012, with a series of initiatives on the occasion of the artist’s 100th birthday.

After the premiere screening of the docufilm Guido Strazza by Nicoletta Nesler and Marilisa Pigasulla, the exhibition Trame e Segni opens. Guido Strazza scheduled through July 29, 2023.

The exhibition, set up in the new hall dedicated to exhibitions on the second floor of Palazzo Carpegna, presents a selection of works from the important donation the artist made in 2018 to the Academy. The selected works are part of the research carried out by the artist in the 1970s around the theme of plot and sign, a reflection that had already led him to investigate new forms of intervention in space from before: a relative space, built ad hoc by the artist to be able to accommodate his own world, his own imagery, with its textures and signs. Each wall presents a series, or part of a series, of works in which the experimental character of his research is grasped, in which textures and signs are analyzed in their different potentialities, according to progressions marked by a rigorous rhythm.

Beginning Thursday, June 22, 2023, every day, Tuesday through Saturday, at 4:30 p.m., the docufilm Guido Strazza by Nicoletta Nesler and Marilisa Piga , which traces Strazza’s research from its beginnings to its most current outcomes, will be shown in the exhibition. In the docufilm Guido Strazza, filmed from the early 2000s to the present, speaks in the first person, unsparingly, to say and communicate. Then there is a small chorus composed of the voices and faces of three women who are special to him and to all those who cannot do without art and its stories. They belong to Ille Strazza, Guido’s wife, Maria Lai artist, and Giuliana Lai artist in turn.

Exhibition information: hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., last admission 5 p.m. Special opening Sunday, July 2, 2023 from 5 to 8 p.m., with accompanied tours at 5 and 6:30 p.m.; Closed Sundays and Mondays, June 29 and July 22, 2023 Free admission.
