The purchase and restoration of the Lamentation over the Body of Christ by Giuseppe Craffonara (Riva del Garda, 1790 - Trent, 1837) are the focus of the MAG Museo Alto Garda’s Christmas exhibition, dedicated precisely to Craffonara, a painter from Riva and a major exponent of Neoclassicism in Trentino in the 19th century. The exhibition Rediscovered Masterpieces. The beginnings of Giuseppe Craffonara, created by Matteo Rapanà in collaboration with Marina Botteri and Chiara Radice, from Nov. 27, 2021 to Jan. 9, 2022 focuses on the new acquisition to enhance the artist’s works already belonging to MAG’s collections.
Born in Riva del Garda in 1790, Giuseppe Craffonara was Trentino’s most important neoclassical painter. After learning the rudiments of drawing and painting in Riva del Garda and Rovereto, in 1814 Craffonara moved to the Academy of Painting in Verona and then two years later to theAcademy of San Luca in Rome.
It is precisely the period of the artist’s Verona beginnings that is the focus of the MAG Museo Alto Garda’s temporary exhibition Capolavori Ritrovati. The beginnings of Giuseppe Craffonara. The occasion is offered by the MAG’s acquisition of the painting Lamentation over the Body of Christ in 2020, which was followed by the necessary restoration to restore the work to its original brilliance. The work was in fact created during Craffonara’s time in Verona (1814 - 1816), at the local Academy of Painting and Sculpture.
