Rimini, Federico Fellini's drawings in Danilo Donati's collection on display at Fulgor Palace

Palazzo del Fulgor in Rimini is hosting an exhibition featuring drawings made by Federico Fellini in the 1970s that belonged to Danilo Donati, among the most distinguished and award-winning costume and set designers of Italian cinema.

A new exhibition entitled I disegni di Federico Fellini nella collezione di Danilo Donati (The drawings of Federico Fellini in the collection of Danilo Donati) opened in Rimini at the Palazzo del Fulgor, featuring 27 drawings made by the famous director in the 1970s. The drawings belonged to Danilo Donati, one of the most distinguished and award-winning costume and set designers of Italian cinema, who won, among other things, an Oscar for the costumes of Federico Fellini’s film Il Casanova. In addition to the drawings, the exhibition includes some Oscar-winning costumes signed by Donati, such as those of the Doge and a lady featured in the opening scene of the Venetian Carnival, Casanova’s black cloak (commemorating the 300th anniversary of the character’s birth) and the army officer’s jacket worn by Henriette, the only woman who won the heart of the legendary seducer.

This temporary exhibition continues the activities of the Fellini Museum, which alternates photographic exhibitions, such as the one dedicated to Marcello Mastroianni that can be visited until Jan. 20, with exhibitions focused on Fellini’s original drawings. On this occasion, a new collection acquired by the City of Rimini as part of the Plan for Contemporary Art (PAC) 2024, promoted by the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity, is presented to the public.

The exhibition includes 27 drawings made in pen or colored markers, including twenty on paper of various formats and seven on restaurant cloth napkins. These works belonged to Danilo Donati, a two-time Oscar winner for costumes: the first in 1969 with Franco Zeffirelli’s Romeo and Juliet and the second, almost a decade later, with Fellini’s Il Casanova.

The works on display, dating from the 1970s, reveal the bond of friendship and complicity between Donati and the Rimini director, which went far beyond their professional collaboration. Their artistic synergy began with Fellini’s Satyricon in the late 1960s and continued throughout the following decade with Fellini’s great masterpieces, including Roma, Amarcord and Il Casanova. Donati returned to work with Fellini in the 1980s, making the costumes for Ginger and Fred and curating both the costumes and sets for Intervista.

The exhibition will be open to the public until Sunday, March 2, with visiting hours Tuesday through Sunday (11 a.m. to 5 p.m.). A free special opening is planned for Monday, January 20, on the anniversary of Fellini’s birth, not only at the Fellini Museum, but also at the City Museum and the Surgeon’s Domus.
