Rembrandt's Adoration of the Magi from the Hermitage to the Complesso della Pilotta

Parma's Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta welcomes Rembrandt's Adoration of the Magi from the Hermitage until January 26, 2020.

On the occasion of the three hundred and fiftieth anniversary of Rembrandt’s death, the Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta in Parma is hosting theAdoration of the Magi, a masterpiece created by the Dutch master in 1632, until January 26, 2020.

The painting on loan from theHermitage in St. Petersburg was executed in grisaille, in an almost colorless chiaroscuro, a technique first introduced in Rome in the first half of the 16th century.

The canvas is placed in the years following his apprenticeship to the painter Pieter Lastman, and one notices an extraordinary scenographic use of light, which focuses especially on the Holy Family in the foreground. One also perceives anillusionistic exaltation of detail that reveals, through painting, the theological weaving of the story.

The exhibition A Rembrandt from the Hermitage. 1669-2019: 350 Years since the Master’s Death allows for a counterpoint between the collections of the Complesso Monumentale della Pilotta, their continuity in the categories of Catholic-based academicism and the other face of Europe, represented by the cultures of the North. In theAdoration of the Magi, reference is made to ancient and oriental iconographies, but links to Italian art are present, particularly in the faces of the Virgin and Child.
