On view from April 4 to September 15, 2019, the exhibition Sheela Gowda. Remains, set up at Pirelli HangarBicocca. This is the first solo exhibition in Italy of Indian artist Sheela Gowda (Bhadravati, Karnataka, India, 1957), considered one of the leading exponents ofcontemporary art in India.
In addition to previously unseen works, works made from 1992 to the present will be on display, including watercolors, prints and site-specific installations. Installations composed of awide variety of materials, such as hair, organic substances, cow excrement, incense and natural pigments, which will be placed in close dialogue with the architecture of the Naves of Pirelli HangarBicocca.
His art ranges from drawing, to sculpture, to large-scale installations using materials that often convey cultural values related to the context from which they come. These works are characterized by a strong plastic value, which take as their starting point elements of modernism, reworked by the artist through production processes with strong ritualistic associations. They are also often linked to local craft traditions and the dimension of labor implicit in artistic creation.
His works have been shown in numerous international solo exhibitions and he has participated in major group shows.
The retrospective is curated by Nuria Enguita and Lucia Aspesi.
