Ravenna, an exhibition commemorating... the 600th anniversary of Dante's passing in 1921

From Sept. 11 to Jan. 10, 2021, the Classense Library in Ravenna is hosting 'Inclusa est flamma,' an exhibition celebrating... the 600th anniversary of Dante Alighieri's death in 1921.

Ravenna will also celebrate Dante Alighieri (Florence, 1265 - Ravenna, 1321) for the seven hundredth anniversary of his death, but it will do so by remembering... the secentenary! From September 11, 2020 to January 10, 2021, the Classense Library will in fact host the exhibition Inclusa est flamma. Ravenna 1921: the Secentenary of Dante’s Death, an exhibition that recalls the initiatives of one hundred years ago to commemorate the then six-hundredth anniversary of the poet’s death. The exhibition is part of the cycle Dante, The Eyes and the Mind, a project organized by the Mar - Art Museum of the City of Ravenna.

On display will be books, posters, photographs, paintings, manuscripts and numerous art objects bestowed as a tribute to Dante and the poet’s “last refuge” city.

Among the most evocative pieces are the official poster of the initiatives created by Galileo Chini, recently restored and presented in its rare complete version (cm 200x140); the monumental Commedia by Leo S. Olschki of 1911, with proem by Gabriele d’Annunzio whose autograph manuscript will be on display; the sacks containing laurel leaves donated by d’Annunzio and decorated by Adolfo De Carolis with the motto “Inclusa est flamma,” the bronze model of the monument to Dante of Trent made by Cesare Zocchi (author of the Monument to the Fallen for Italian Independence and Freedom in Viale Farini in Ravenna).

The exhibition, which enjoys the patronage of the National Committee for the Celebration of the Seven Hundredth Anniversary of the Death of Dante Alighieri and the Società Dantesca Italiana, is organized by the Municipality of Ravenna, Biblioteca Classense and Mar - Art Museum of the City of Ravenna in collaboration with the Centro Dantesco dei Frati Minori Conventuali - Ravenna, Casa editrice Leo S. Olschki, Oriani House Foundation, Historical Institute of Resistance and Contemporary Age of Ravenna with the contribution of Emilia-Romagna Region and IBC Emilia-Romagna.
