Preview: Palazzo dei Diamanti's next exhibition will be dedicated to Boldini and fashion

The next exhibition offered by Ferrara ’s Palazzo dei Diamanti will be dedicated to Giovanni Boldini and his relationship with fashion, open to the public from February 16 to June 2, 2019.

Boldini had the great gift of knowing how to portray the elegance of the Belle Époque, “he knew how to reproduce the dazzling sensation that women felt when they were seen in their best moments,” said Cecil Beaton, one of the best-known fashion photographers of the 20th century.

He gave fashion a fundamental role in his art: understood as dress, accessory, but also sophisticated expression that transfigures the body into a place of desire it soon becomes an essential and distinctive attribute of his portraiture.
And the women portrayed are depicted in sensual poses that enhance the lines of the splendid dresses. The artist anticipates with his figures the languages of twentieth-century cinema and glamour photography.

For the first time, on the occasion of the exhibition"Boldini and Fashion," the deep connection between the artist andParisian haute couture and the influence this had on his portraiture and on other painters such as Degas, Sargent, Whistler and Paul Helleu will be analyzed.

The exhibition will be divided into thematic sections, each accompanied by literary figures who dealt with the greatness of fashion as an art form, including Baudelaire, Wilde, Proust, and D’Annunzio.

Visitors will be led among paintings, extraordinary period clothing and precious objects with ironic value that will tell the story of the links between art, fashion and literature during the Belle Époque.

The exhibition will be curated by Barbara Guidi with the collaboration of Virginia Hill and organized by the Ferrara Arte Foundation and the Ferrara Galleries of Modern and Contemporary Art.
