From June 21 to Aug. 10, 2024, the Museolaboratorio d’Arte Contemporanea in Città Sant’Angelo (Pescara) presents Alfredo Pirri’s Luogo Pensiero Luce project, realized with the support of the PAC 2022-2023 - Plan for Contemporary Art, promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture. The site-specific work created by the artist entitled Companions and Angels - for Città Sant’Angelo was opened to the public on Friday, June 21, becoming part of the museum’s collection.
The title of the work is borrowed from some verses of the musical piece by the group Radiodervish, La rosa di Turi, dedicated to Antonio Gramsci ’s imprisonment in Turi, where he wrote the famous notebooks from prison. Comrades and Angels - for Città Sant’Angelo is part of a series of works that refer to the theme of imprisonment and the desire to escape. The three-dimensional work is designed to be visited only partially by the visitor and placed inside one of the museum’s rooms as a small, parallelepiped-shaped room composed of mirrored walls and surfaces. The methacrylate walls are colored by the artist during production and kneaded with tanned feathers from geese already slaughtered for feeding. With reflections of natural light from the windows, the museum is pervaded by an entirely new illumination.
Companions and Angels - for Città Sant’Angelo stems from Alfredo Pirri’s close relationship with a long history of transformation of the Museolaboratory. First as the Convent of the Poor Clares, then an internment camp and tobacco factory, in 1996 the first seed was sown for the realization of the Museolaboratorio with an exhibition entitled Nuovo Luogo per L’Arte in which Alfredo Pirri participated among the artists. The work is inspired by the connections with the place, the landscape from which the museum overlooks and its history, as the director, Enzo De Leonibus, points out: “And everything enters from this overlook, how then not to think of this relationship with nature, light and thought. The work proposed in Alfredo Pirri’s project Compagni e Angeli - for Città Sant’Angelo has this kind of invitation and I think it is also a choice consequent to the sense of this place.”
The project is supported by the PAC 2022-2023 - Plan for Contemporary Art, promoted by the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.
Alfredo Pirri (Cosenza, 1957) lives and works in Rome. His artistic practice meets different disciplines: painting and sculpture, architecture and installation. His first solo exhibitions date back to the 1980s. In 1988 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale, while in 1999 he was among the protagonists of the group show Minimalia: An Italian Vision in 20th Century Art, curated by Achille Bonito Oliva at MoMA PS1 in New York. In 2023 he received an Honorary Degree in Architectural Design, from theUniversity of Roma Tre. He often collaborates with architects on multidisciplinary projects, in which art and architecture dialogue harmoniously. In recent years he has participated in the realization of major public works including the restoration of historic buildings such as the Kursaal Theater in Bari and the Maggio Fiorentino Theater in Florence. Predominant in his work has always been a focus on space, an interest he defines as “political”: understood as an attempt to show, something necessary for survival itself, a kind of battle for existence. Each of his works becomes a spatial, emotional and temporal place, where the viewer has the opportunity to enter in order to immerse himself in chromatic experiences that destabilize and disorientate him: his are true environments of light.
