The Church of Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa will be the site from April 21 to May 24, 2018, of the exhibition"Confluences" by Andrea Santarlasci, an artist who gives special attention in his works to the relationships between man and the environment.
On this occasion he has created a project closely related to architecture, but also to its surroundings, both historical and natural. A project intended to reflect on the possibilities of memory and imagination.
The exhibition, curated by Ludovico Pratesi, consists of two new installations,"Where what disappears manifests itself" and"Untitled (declivity)," both from 2018.
In the first, the artist references the ancient confluence of the Auser River through a neon sign with a fragment from the philosopher Heraclitus, which reads “In the same rivers we enter and do not enter, we are and we are not.”
In the second, the artist evokes a fall, a deposition, a loss or death itself, through a nine-meter-long log leaning on the ground at an angle and poised on some stairs.
Andrea Santarlasci himself said, “The architecture, with all its references including religious and spiritual, the river with its contemplative dimension immanent and transcendent at the same time, the vanished place of the confluence of the Auser in the Arno, with its susceptible evocation, can suggest, and give a glimpse of an image..... I have attempted to trace a common thread that leads us to those underlying themes, those motifs, of loss and persistence, of emptiness and remembrance, that unite the church and its context..... suggestions that open in a web of multiple, sometimes enigmatic and mysterious references.”
The exhibition is open for free admission on Monday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.; Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3 to 7 p.m.; Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.
