Look Beyond is the title of the exhibition presented at the Accesso Gallery in Pietrasanta from June 27 to August 1, 2021. Halfway between an invitation and a friendly exhortation, the double solo show urges the public to look beyond what is perceived at first glance: Luca Moscariello ’s eleven paintings and Kelly Robert’s eight sculptures, of medium and large size, with bright and vibrant colors, in fact involve the viewer in a perceptual game in which the first impression is not what counts.
It is therefore this same effect produced on the viewer that unites the work of the two artists, who work with very different languages.
The works in the exhibition by Luca Moscariello (1980, lives and works in Sala Bolognese), all belonging to the Puzzles series, made in oil, enamel and plaster on wood, play with the viewer’s gaze, leaving him uncertain: not only do the paintings resemble a puzzle, like pieces that fit together, but they deceive the eye with their three-dimensionality and use of trompe l’oeil. Blocks of color seem to emerge from the surface or sink into a wooden box, a delicate variation in tone seems to create a fold in the panel, shadows suggest hollow spaces. With just a few synthetic elements, the viewer’s eye is enraptured, feeling compelled to discover more.
As the artist explains, “These are visual deceptions that compromise perception and lead us to carefully investigate beyond what we see.” These paintings, for Moscariello, are also a metaphor for the human need to look deeper, to not settle for the surface of things and events.
Instead, it is the surprising plasticity (sometimes soft, sometimes abruptly angular) that triggers the “game” between the audience and the works of Kelly Robert (1976, lives and works between Carrara and New York).
The alternation of sinuous surfaces and sharp contours, and the resulting sharp alternation of light and shadow, induce the eye to “navigate” the sculpture and gradually discover it.
Molded in clay, then fired and painted, Robert’s sculptures depict women who, after facing a moment of difficulty, emerge from it with renewed confidence and strength. The artist purposely exaggerates the twisted positions beyond natural forms to emphasize the energy and power released in these moments of hope, while not losing grace and softness.
The artist herself explains her female figures this way, “I am constantly fascinated by how rooted in strength they are.” It is on this strength, invisible at first glance yet disruptive, that Robert wants the viewer to focus.
With this exhibition, Kelly Robert’s work is presented for the first time in Europe.
A digital catalog, with images of the works in the exhibition and updated bio-bibliographical apparatus, completes the exhibition.
