Palazzo Merulana presents the exhibition project Picasso and Photography. The Maturity Years. Photographs by Edward Quinn and André Villers, 1951-1973, curated by J. Abelló Juanpere, J. Fèlix Bentz, M. Ancora. The exhibition is an unprecedented account of the life of the artist and the man Pablo Picasso.

Two photographers, André Villers and Edward Quinn, have captured his intimate moments and spurts of creative research, in which all aspects of the Master’s life emerge: personality, family, mask and disguise, studio, and the bond with the two photographers themselves for a journey of discovery of one of the greatest protagonists of contemporary art history.

More than 90 photographs owned by the fund of Luxembourg-based collector Guy Ludovissy, managed by the Reial Cercle Artístic de Barcelona, are displayed to compare the work of the two photographers.

Both Villers and Quinn became friends, collaborators and confidants of Picasso, terms granted to very few people throughout the artist’s lifetime.

Villers and Quinn produced a series of unexpected and singular photographic portraits, in which the master tested his skills for disguise, jest, caricature and parody.The photographs presented in the exhibition thus offer the public for the first time the chance to peer into his most hidden intimacy, revealing the man behind the artist. A man rich in passions but also in foibles and obsessions: Picasso learned over time, and through ’personal experience, that there was a connection between everyday events, behavior and the outcome of his art.

The exhibition traces through six sections the whimsy and humanity of Pablo Picasso, through the gaze, attention, care and narrative of two great masters.
