From Oct. 25, 2019, to Feb. 2, 2020, Senigallia City of Photography will host Oliviero Toscani’s Razza Umana exhibition: seventy photographs displayed in the rooms of Palazzo Ducale and Palazzetto Baviera will tell the story of the world’s citizens to reflect onequality among peoples.

Launched in 2007, the Human Race project, defined by the photographer himself as “a socio-political, cultural and anthropological study that portrays the morphology of the human race in order to observe its peculiarities and characteristics, to understand the differences,” is a traveling project. At each stop along the way, the artist sets up a photo studio to portray local people, ordinary people who represent the sample of humanity that will be displayed in the exhibition, compared with shots taken in other parts of the world. The result is a multimedia archive of photographs and videos that encapsulates the essence of humanity, a set of expressions, physical, somatic, social and cultural characteristics of the population, at the expense of differences, as Achille Bonito Oliva explains, “Razza Umana is the result of a collective subject, the study of Oliviero Toscani special envoy in the reality of homogenization and globalization. With his frontal perspective he delivers us an endless gallery of portraits that confirm the role of art and photography to represent a value that is that of the coexistence of differences.”

Photography becomes a tool of deep knowledge that allows breaking down inequalities, overcoming gender, social, cultural differences. “My quest is to photograph by making myself look straight into the eyes,” said Toscani himself.

Hours: Wednesday through Friday from 3 to 7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, holidays and pre-holidays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 to 7 p.m.
