The National Gallery of Umbria in Perugia opened its doors on January 17, 1918, and became one ofItaly’s most important museums.
To celebrate the centenary of the gallery, from September 22, 2018 to January 6, 2019, the exhibition “The Other Gallery” will be held, which is proposed as a selection of works taken from the deposits or rarely exhibited, in some cases even for the first time.
We are talking about works created between the thirteenth and sixteenth centuries by artists such as the Master of the dossals of Subiaco, Meo da Siena, Allegretto Nuzi, Rossello di Jacopo Franchi, Giovanni Boccati, Benedetto Bonfigli, Benvenuto di Giovanni, Bartolomeo Caporali, Pietro Vannucci known as Perugino, Eusebio da San Giorgio, Berto di Giovanni, Domenico Alfani, and Dono Doni.
The selection of works, made according to their degree of conservation and importance, was carried out by Marco Pierini, director of the National Gallery of Umbria, assisted by a équipe of scholars such as Michela Becchis, Andrea De Marchi, Alessandro Delpriori, Elizabeth Dester, Gabriele Fattorini, Giulia Mancini, Fabio Marcelli, Matteo Mazzalupi, Veruska Picchiarelli, Marzia Sagini, Daniele Simonelli, Maria Rita Silvestrelli, Federica Zalabra, and Emanuele Zappasodi.
For Marco Pierini, “the deposits of a museum are places that in the collective imagination often take the form of dusty warehouses full of wonderful works, more or less guiltily removed from public view. But the reality is somewhat different. Not only is dust absent from the repositories-or at least it should be! - but the works stored there have different roles and functions in the museum dynamic. Some, like the reserves of soccer teams, sit on the bench, ready to take the field in place of others temporarily on loan or under restoration, others still await the visit of scholars and connoisseurs who can study them and better enhance them, and finally others - though valuable, sometimes beautiful - bear too many of the ravages of time on them for them to be exhibited to the public and must be content with a few friendly visits from insiders, ready to goofily soften in the face of the faded beauty that once was. With the exception of the latter, we have selected for The Other Gallery a hundred or so astonishing panels, canvases and sculptures, all worthy of appearing honorably along with their companions that make up the exhibition itinerary of our museum.”
The catalog, Silvana editorial, will be published in the fall to allow for accommodating photographs of the installation.
