One of Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo’s most famous works, On the Barn, is about to be exhibited in the artist’s studio in his hometown of Volpedo, in the province of Alessandria, for an exhibition to be held June 2-30. On Saturday, May 18, however, the preview of this exhibition will be held at the Maspes Galleries in Milan, where the painting will be on display for one day only, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Donated by his daughters to the Municipality of Volpedo and open to the public thanks to the Associazione Pellizza da Volpedo onlus, Sul Fienile will be exhibited after careful restoration has restored its original splendor and presented in its original frame.
The purpose of the exhibition is to allow visitors to learn more about the development of the artistic life of Giuseppe Pellizza, who always remained linked to Volpedo and the surrounding nature, the starting point for the elaboration of most of his works. Further food for thought will come from the possibility of direct comparison between the barn in Pellizza’s painting and the physical location, namely the barn at home, which still exists a few steps from the studio.
The exhibition, curated by Aurora Scotti, a scholar of Pellizza’s work for many years and author of the general catalog of the painter from Alessandria, and the Pellizza da Volpedo Association, is organized by the Maspes Galleries in Milan, under the patronage of the Municipality of Volpedo.
Accompanying the exhibition is a catalog Edizioni Gallerie Maspes containing an introductory essay by the curator and a series of insights into the critical fortune of the work, which has remained in a private collection for more than a century and is therefore rarely seen, the literary/artistic debate developed from the painting’s theme, Giuseppe Pellizza’s relationship with the places of Volpedo, and the results of non-invasive diagnostic investigations and restoration, which will better understand the creative process and the making of the painting.
