From February 9 to May 5, 2019, the Scuderie del Castello Visconteo in Pavia will pay tribute to Vivian Maier (New York, 1926 - Chicago, 2009), one of the most singular and mysterious artist figures, the recently rediscovered ’nanny-photographer’ who has been called one of the greatest exponents of so-called street photography. The exhibition Vivian Maier. Street photographer, curated by Anne Morin and Piero Francesco Pozzi, is promoted by Fondazione Teatro Fraschini and the Municipality of Pavia - Culture, Tourism, Education, Youth Policies Sector, produced and organized by ViDi, in collaboration with diChroma photography, John Maloof Collection, Howard Greenberg Gallery, New York.
The exhibition proposes a story in images composed of more than one hundred black-and-white and color photographs, as well as super 8 mm films, capable of describing Vivian Maier up close, letting the works themselves emphasize the most intimate and personal aspects of the production of the artist who, while she was alive, took an impressive number of photographs without ever showing them to anyone, as if she wanted to jealously preserve them for herself. The exhibition thus offers, the chance to discover an extraordinary photographer whose profound and never trivial images tell an original insight into American life in the second half of the 20th century.
Throughout the duration of the exhibition a series of meetings and events will allow visitors to learn more about Vivian Maier’s work and the history of photography.
