From September 20 to November 29, 2020 CAMERA - Centro Italiano per la Fotografia in Turin hosts the exhibition Paolo ventura. Carousel, curated by Walter Guadagnini.
An exhibition dedicated to the eclectic career of Paolo Ventura (Milan, 1968): after working as a fashion photographer, he moved to New York in the early 2000s. Starting with his first works, the artist combines great practical skills with a poetic vision of the world, building sets in which short fairy-tale and surreal stories come to life, later immortalized by the camera.
His first awards came with War Souvenir (2005), a reworking of the atmosphere of World War I through small theatrical sets and puppets. After ten years in the United States, he returned to Italy, where he created some of his most famous projects such as the set design for Pagliacci by Ruggero Leoncavallo, in collaboration with the Teatro Regio in Turin.
On the occasion of the exhibition, CAMERA will host a selection of the most striking works from the past fifteen years: drawings, models, set designs, papier-mâché masks and theatrical costumes. The exhibition is not intended to be a retrospective, but rather a staging of all the recurring themes of his poetics, including doubles and fiction. Also featured will be two previously unseen projects, Grazia Ricevuta and the work the artist is making following a residency at the Central Institute for Catalogue and Documentation in Rome, initiated thanks to a collaboration between CAMERA and the Ministry body.
