On view through Jan. 31, 2019, is the exhibition CHINA 1978. Travel Notes at the Temporary Gallery in Bologna. The exhibition showcases the black-and-white shots of photographer Paolo Gotti, who in 1978 participated in an investigative trip organized by theEdizioni Oriente Political Cultural Institute in Milan to take a closer look at Chinese society: from Beijing to Manchuria, Gotti shot through his lens a Chinese society that forty years ago was very different from what it is today with the bizarre and improvised means of transportation, signs drawn with chalk and to large panels illustrated with promotional comics, traditional embroiderers to drills by female soldiers armed with rifles, special schools for visually impaired children and the factories that have made China the economic powerhouse it is today. All this originated in the twilight of the Cultural Revolution, launched by Mao in 1966 against the Chinese Communist Party structures and ended in 1976, the year the “gang of four” was arrested. In addition to Paolo Gotti, Silvia Calamandrei, Lisa Foa, Franco Marrone, Paola Manacorda and Claudio Meldolesi were also part of the delegation.
The exhibition is organized under the patronage of theConfucius Institute of the University of Bologna, and the 2019 China 1978 calendar will be presented on the occasion. Once Upon a Time with color photographs of that journey. Opening hours: Tuesday through Sunday from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and 5 to 7:30 p.m. Free admission. Temporary Gallery is located at 91/a Via Santo Stefano in Bologna.
