Donatello and Olafur Eliasson: these are the two major exhibitions to be held at Palazzo Strozzi, Florence, in 2022. After the current exhibition, Jeff Koons’s solo show Shine, which will close on January 30, 2022, the programming for next year will kick off, featuring two major exhibitions that will be flanked by a rich program of events and special projects in the constant dialogue between tradition and innovation typical of Palazzo Strozzi.
Donatello, which will bring together for the first time his most important masterpieces in a major project produced together with the Bargello Museums and in collaboration with the Skulpturensammlung und Museum für Byzantinische Kunst of the State Museums in Berlin and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Palazzo Strozzi presents it as “a historic and unrepeatable exhibition that aims to reconstruct the extraordinary journey of one of the most important and influential masters of Italian art of all time,” thanks in part to comparisons with masterpieces by artists such as Brunelleschi, Masaccio, Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Raphael and Michelangelo. Curated by Francesco Caglioti and conceived as a single exhibition over two venues, Palazzo Strozzi and Museo Nazionale del Bargello, the project was born as a celebration of Donatello in dialogue with museums, collections and institutions in Florence and throughout Italy as well as through fundamental international collaborations, aiming to broaden the reflection on this revolutionary artist in materials, techniques and genres, and to finally embrace the dimensions of Donatello’s universe.
This will be followed in the fall by the largest solo exhibition ever held in Italy dedicated to Olafur Eliasson (Sept. 22, 2022-Jan. 29, 2023), one of the most influential artists of our time, which will engage the public in an unprecedented interaction with the Renaissance architecture of Palazzo Strozzi. Curated by Arturo Galansino, the exhibition will allow visitors to immerse themselves in Eliasson’s artistic world through a broad overview of works from his 30 years of activity, but also through new works designed specifically for Palazzo Strozzi. Often using elemental materials such as light, water and fog, Eliasson is celebrated for art that reflects on the idea of perception and in which the viewer is at the center of the experience as an active protagonist. Through sculpture, installation, painting, photography, architecture, and design, Eliasson explores the role of art in the contemporary world as an interdisciplinary field that brings together scientific research, politics, and environmental protection. The exhibition is promoted and organized by Fondazione Palazzo Strozzi in collaboration with Studio Olafur Eliasson.
