Palazzo Grassi, the twentieth century seen through photographs from the Condé Nast archives

Palazzo Grassi presents the first major exhibition devoted to photographs from the Condé Nast archives, some of which were recently acquired by the Pinault Collection. More than 400 works by more than 150 artists trace the 20th century.

From March 12, 2023 to January 7, 2024, Palazzo Grassi in Venice presents the exhibition Chronorama. Photographic Treasures of the 20th Century, curated by Matthieu Humery, photography consultant at the Pinault Collection.

This is the first major exhibition dedicated to masterpieces from the Condé Nast archives, some of which were recently acquired by the Pinault Collection. The exhibition brings together more than four hundred works that take us back to the 20th century through the events, social phenomena and illustrious personalities that marked it. Tracing the century from the 1910s to the dawn of the 1980s, this selection presents the works of more than one hundred and fifty international artists such as Edward Steichen, Berenice Abbott, Cecil Beaton, Lee Miller, André Kertész, Horst P. Horst, Diane Arbus, Irving Penn, and Helmut Newton, among the photographers; Eduardo Garcia Benito, Helen Dryden, and George Wolfe Plank, among the illustrators. Among the greatest talents of their generation, these artists defined the photographic and artistic aesthetics of the time through the publication of their work in magazines published by Condé Nast(Vogue, Vanity Fair, House & Garden, Glamour, GQ and so on).

The core of historical images in the exhibition is placed in dialogue with Chronorama Redux, a project that offers a contemporary look at the works of Chronorama through the works of four artists-Tarrah Krajnak, Erik N. Mack, Giulia Andreani, and Daniel Spivakov. The works will be installed in four different exhibition spaces of Palazzo Grassi as interludes that break into the chronological path of the main exhibition.

The exhibition Chronorama Redux is realized with the support of SAINT LAURENT.
