Until August 25, 2019, the exhibition Carlo Basilico. Painting as the pages of a diary.
Curated by Claudio Guarda with the participation of the poet and writer Alberto Nessi, this exhibition is being held 20 years after the first anthological exhibition held in Chiasso and took off from the recently published monograph on the artist.
On display are paintings by Carlo Basilico preserved by his grandson Rudy. The artist painted mainly for pleasure and to give vent to the need to stop emotions on paper or canvas.
Trained in Turin, his paintings are a kind of domestic diary made on his days off from work as the owner of the Prada painter-decorators’ business in Chiasso. He gave color with quick touches without mixing it on the palette and often played on the contrast between light and shadow. He favored portraits and self-portraits in which he pursued continuous self-inquiry, observation of family harmony and a great passion for landscapes. Themes always inspired by the feeling of the real and supported by a contemplative gaze.
He also used different techniques: from oil to tempera, watercolor to ink, pastel to charcoal, pencil drawings to sanguine.
Alberto Nessi, winner of the Swiss Grand Prize for Literature in 2016, participated in the monograph and exhibition.
