Paestum reopens, for the time being, only in China.
Wei Quan, director of the Sichuan Museum, addressed a letter to the director of the Paestum Archaeological Park, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, to address feelings of solidarity and hope for Italy and to inform that as of March 18, the exhibition Paestum - a city of the ancient Mediterranean, closed due to a Covid-19 health emergency, would be reopened to the public.
The exhibition, which opened last Nov. 26 in the capital of Sichuan province, Chengdu, features 134 artifacts from the deposits of the Paestum Archaeological Park.
Zuchtriegel, on behalf of the entire staff of Paestum, responded to the Sichuan Museum’s message of solidarity and hope, saying, "At this difficult juncture for Italy, with the park and museum of Paestum closed due to the health emergency, it is an immense pleasure to learn that the exhibition in China Paestum - a city of the ancient Mediterranean will reopen to the public. Thanks to the collaboration we have been putting in place since 2018, we can say that the revitalization of Paestum post-pandemic has begun, albeit from a location far from the site. This fills us with hope and confidence that together we can all overcome the current difficulty and come out more united and stronger. Thank you. See you soon."
A signal of hope addressed to the Paestum Archaeological Park and other cultural institutions: that they can reopen their doors to visitors as soon as possible to continue to communicate Italian history and culture to all.
