From July 7 to Aug. 10, 2018, Futura Art Gallery in Pietrasanta is exhibiting the irreverent works of Giuseppe Veneziano (Mazzarino, 1971) in the exhibition entitled Operette immorali whose title takes up, reinterpreting its meaning, Giacomo Leopardi’s celebrated poetic collection. Curated by Ivan Quaroni, the exhibition promises to turn the spotlight back on one of the most discussed and controversial artists on the contemporary Italian scene. Veneziano, a painter with international experience, had already exhibited his works in Pietrasanta in 2010 in the Zeitgeist exhibition, which sparked a controversy with the municipality and the diocese because of the contents of the exhibition: in fact, the exhibition featured the Madonna of the Third Reich, one of Veneziano’s most controversial works.
It is precisely scandao, provocation and irreverence that are typical traits of Giuseppe Veneziano’s production: a lashing and corrosive reading of the world and current events that also reflects his work as an illustrator, cartoonist and cartoonist for newspapers and magazines, an activity to which he devoted himself before turning completely to painting. “Giuseppe Veneziano,” the presentation reads, “has developed an effective pictorial language, based on a concise and nuance-free color palette, which metabolizes images from literature, cinema, comics, illustration and especially art history to observe our time with an ironic and disenchanted gaze. Madonnas, political figures, protagonists of the art world, immortal Disney and Marvel icons are the headwords of a visual alphabet that functions as a merciless commentary on the vices and virtues of the contemporary world.”
Some 20 works will be exhibited at the Futura Art Gallery that address the themes of myth, history, fantasy and chronicle, typical of the production of Veneziano, who uses the mash-up technique for his works, the same technique used by many DJs to mix contrasting and antithetical elements (e.g., the relationship between real and fantastic characters to induce the viewer to reconsider the boundary between reality and fiction, lie and truth, morality and immorality). The exhibition is open daily from 6 to 00:30 p.m. and is accompanied by a catalog with text by Ivan Quaroni. More information on the Futura Art Gallery website.
