More than 50 years of magnificent failures, a solo exhibition by Oliviero Toscani that will remain open until June 30, is underway at the MAR in Ravenna. Failure is for the renowned photographer a perspective, because feeling arrived means stopping, and for him it is impossible to stand still. Toscani, in fact, through his creativity has made the world discuss some of the hottest contemporary issues such as racism, the death penalty, AIDS and war.
Among the works on display are the famous Kiss Between Priest and Nun from 1991, the Three Hearts White/Black/Yellow from 1996, No-Anorexia from 2007, and many others. There is no shortage of the Human Race series, a socio-political, cultural and anthropological study for which Toscani has set up photographic sets in dozens of cities around the world to investigate the morphology of human beings, to see how we are made, what face we have, understand the differences, “take somatic imprints and capture the faces of humanity,” as he says.
Also on display are works made for the world of fashion, which the great photographer helped to radically change: from the famous photographs of Donna Jordan to those of Monica Bellucci, as well as portraits of Mick Jagger, Lou Reed, Carmelo Bene, Federico Fellini and some of the most important protagonists of world culture from the 1970s onward.
