From Feb. 10, throughout the two-year period 2024-2025, GAMeC in Bergamo will present to the public the new exhibition Una Galleria, Tante Collezioni, curated by Sara Fumagalli, Valentina Gervasoni, and Angela Fabrizia Previtali, which aims to restore the richness and eclecticism of the modern and contemporary art heritage of the city of Bergamo. The exhibition conceived to be visitable for an extended time, in parallel with the Think Like a Mountain program that in the next two years will involve the city and its territory with diffuse projects realized in collaboration with artists and local communities. The exhibition path intends to guide the public towards the inauguration of the Gallery’s future headquarters, presenting the collections from a new perspective compared to what was explored by the cycle The Impermanent Collection (2018-2023), a research, exhibition and workshop platform within which from 2018 to 2023 GAMeC presented a series of temporary exhibitions with the aim of soliciting reflection on the dynamic character of its Collections.
Una Galleria, Tante Collezioni intends to bring out the differences between the multiple nuclei that make up the museum’s collections, placing in dialogue, without following a chronological succession, more than 150 works by Italian and international 20th-century masters with works by contemporary artists along the nine exhibition halls. The identity and history of GAMeC’s heritage are the focus of the exhibition, which aims to highlight works belonging to the largest number of nuclei of the Collections exhibited so far, some of which are presented to the public for the first time. The exhibition design, curated by Maurizio Bosa, translates into spatial and morphological metaphor the dynamic idea of “putting on display” what is preserved in the Gallery’s deposits. The rooms accommodate paintings by 20th-century artists, part of the Gianfranco and Luigia Spajani Collection, a selection of works by Giacomo Manzù and the Stucchi Collection, centered on the 1950s and 1960s, and a significant nucleus of works dating from the second half of the 20th century. Also, a selection of donations from artists and collectors of the new millennium, which also includes works that have become part of the museum’s holdings thanks to major funds and awards: the Lorenzo Bonaldi Prize for Art - EnterPrize, an international award that since 2003 GAMeC has dedicated to curators under 30; the Meru Art*Science Award, which for more than ten years has supported the research of artists investigating the link between art and science; the Club GAMeC Prize, conceived in 2016 by the association of friends of the Gallery, which rewards the work of young Italian artists; and the Fund named after collector Arturo Toffetti, which has made possible the creation of important solo shows dedicated to contemporary artists.
Also on display are works that have entered the Collections through projects that GAMeC has developed in recent years thanks to the support of the Ministry of Culture’s General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity, such as Italian Council, a program aimed at promoting Italian art internationally, and PAC-Piano per l’Arte Contemporanea, which provides funding to enrich Italian public collections. The exhibition is complemented by a series of photographs from the Lanfranco Colombo Collection and several examples of medals and related models donated by Vittorio Lorioli, along with a selection of films from the Nino Zucchelli archive.
In addition, on the occasion of the opening, from Feb. 10 to 13, 2024, GAMeC offers a special program dedicated to all audiences, with free activities: four days dedicated to creativity and participation among visits, workshops and accessible routes, with special opening from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
