From June 30 to July 14, 2019, at the former Church of the Manna D’Oro in Spoleto, the Neural Mirrorinstallation will be open to the public, which aims to bringArtificial Intelligence technology to the field of art and research. Neural Mirror is curated by interaction design studio Ultravioletto for Fondazione Carla Fendi. “This year the Foundation explores the scientific abstractions of Artificial Intelligence and the practical applications of robotics. There is no aspect of our daily life, in fact, that is not touched by Artificial Intelligence and crowded with robotic presences, even if we are not yet fully aware of it,” said President Maria Teresa Venturini Fendi.
Neural Mirror aims to explore the human reflection in the eye of machines and visualize the exact moment when they begin to perceive and interpret reality. Indeed, perception is one of the foundational aspects in the research field of human-robot interaction: increasingly high-performance calculators have the ability to understand our world. Where they are and what are the characteristics of animate and inanimate objects in space, how they interact and what semantic relationships arise are just some of the possibilities of Neural Mirror Artificial Intelligence.
In an ever-changing immersive environment, the visitor becomes a stream of information interpreted and enacted by Artificial Intelligence, which reprocesses theimage in real time, transforming it into a digital Alter Ego. The human figure is scanned and transformed into a point cloud by a Face Recognition algorithm. The body becomes a stream of data, gender, demographic references, emotional state, taking shape and meaning.
A virtual reflection that becomes concrete through the tangibility of a printed graphic sign. What we see in the mirror interface is the machine’s interpretation of ourselves, our body reinvented.
