Contemporary Forest, the new solo exhibition by Sudanese painter Mutaz Elemam, transforms the artistic gesture into a chromatic explosion of plant landscapes. A journey between nature and identity, with works that blend African tradition and contemporary sensibility.

From Feb. 20 to March 30, 2025, Shazar Gallery in Naples inaugurates Contemporary Forest, the solo exhibition of Mutaz Elemam, a Sudanese artist who lives and works between France and Cairo.Elemam brings to the Via Pasquale Scura a body of unpublished works, in which color and nature become the protagonists of an ever-evolving pictorial research.

A keen observer of reality and experimenter with expressive languages, Elemam boasts a long international career, with exhibitions in cities such as New York, Miami, Beirut, Doha, Beijing and Khartoum. His second Italian solo show is part of the programming of Shazar Gallery, which is always open to dialogue between cultures and the most innovative artistic trends.

Nature as memory and identity

The new cycle of works presented in Contemporary Forest marks an evolution in the language of Elemam, who reworks his own stylistic signature through an explosion of colors and expressive brushstrokes. While not betraying his artistic vision, the painter introduces an even more dynamic and vibrant dimension, which transforms the canvas into a plant universe in constant motion.

His works, seemingly abstract at first glance, gradually reveal more and more defined scenarios: trees, flowers and grasses stand out in a dense and enveloping verticality, evoking landscapes inspired by the places visited by the artist and his homeland. Painting thus becomes a place of memory, where nature and identity intertwine to give life to a world rich in nuance and suggestion.
