In anticipation of the major exhibition dedicated to Antonio Canova (Possagno, 1757 - Rome, 1822), entitled Canova and Antiquity and scheduled to be held at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples (MANN) in 2019, the Neapolitan institute has signed an important agreement with theHermitage in St. Petersburg: in a public meeting, the two directors, Michail Piotrovsky (Hermitage) and Paolo Giulierini (MANN), anticipated the loans that the Russian museum will grant to their Neapolitan colleagues.
These are six masterpieces by Canova (the Genius of Death, the Dancer, the Standing Hebe, theWinged Cupid, the Standing Cupid and Psyche group, and the Three Graces) to be joined by the Roman statue of theSleeping Hermaphrodite (from the 3rd-1st century B.C.) and the Hercules and Lyca group. In return, the MANN, together with the Pompeii Superintendency, will work to prepare, at the same time as the exhibition on Canova, a major exhibition in St. Petersburg devoted precisely to Pompeii.
