Naples, Carminiello Church reopens and hosts Bill Viola's video works

In Naples, the Carminiello Church reopens, hosting for the occasion the exhibition "Bill Viola: Return to Life" from September 2, 2022. Video-works by the American artist are visible.

Starting September 2, 2022, the Carminiello Church in Naples will reopen to the public to host a new exhibition of Bill Viola’s work, entitled Bill Viola. Return to Life. The American artist, father of video art, returns to the Campania capital and will exhibit in one of the city’s artistic jewels. The architectural jewel at 30 Via Carlo de Cesare, in the Quartieri Spagnoli, behind Via Toledo and a stone’s throw from Piazza Trieste e Trento and Piazza del Plebiscito, features the majolica floor, the work of the Bottega di Giuseppe e Donato Massa, master tile makers, best known for having created the Chiostro Maiolicato di Santa Chiara, but active throughout Naples and, in particular, in the city’s most important churches in the 18th century.

On this occasion, visitors will be able to view five video works by Bill Viola, specially selected by Bill Viola Studio. Thus, Earth Martyr, Air Martyr, Fire Mart yr and Water Martyr (all 2014), derived from the large-scale permanent video installation Martyrs (Earth, Air, Fire, Water), inaugurated in St. Paul’s Cathedral in London in May 2014, and Three Women (2008), part of the Transfigurations series, dedicated to reflecting on the passage of time and the process through which a person’s interiority is transformed, will be on view.

Born in 1951, Bill Viola is internationally recognized as one of the most significant artists in video art. Video becomes a vital form of contemporary art; his installations are total environments that envelop the viewer in images and sound, using cutting-edge technology. Viola uses video to explore the phenomena of sensory perception as a pathway to self-knowledge. His works focus on universal human experiences, such as birth, death, and the development of consciousness, and are rooted in both Eastern and Western art, as well as spiritual traditions, including Zen Buddhism, Islamic Sufism, and Christian mysticism.

Hours: Wednesday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Closed Tuesdays.

Tickets: Full 10 euros, reduced under 18 euros 8 euros, Free for children under 5.
