From Dec. 21, 2018 to May 15, 2019, the Capodimonte Museum and Real Bosco hosts the exhibition Deposits of Capodimonte. Stories yet to be written. Organized in conjunction with the publishing house Electa, the exhibition showcases 1220 of works including paintings, statues, tapestries, porcelain, weapons, and decorative arts objects coming solely from Capodimonte’s five depots(Palazzotto, 131, 85, Farnesiano, and GDS). Depots, often considered as closed, dusty universes, impenetrable guardians with hidden and ignored treasures, are in reality, the place originated by human choices, they identify an era and, through the selection of works made by men, make it possible to trace a taste, a historical-artistic reason, a conservation need.
The exhibition is the second chapter of a trilogy of exhibitions (the first was Carta Bianca. Capodimonte Imaginaire in 2018 and the third will be Once Upon a Time in Naples. History of a Great Beauty in 2019), which had the sense of challenging the constitutive principle of the museum, proposing it no longer as a static and immobile entity, supposedly a masterful lesson, but as a place of freedom, creativity, and expressive potential.
Among the works on display are Captain James Cook ’s collection of exotic objects donated by Lord Hamilton to Ferdinand IV of Bourbon, and the numerous Meissen porcelain tableware from Berlin by the Richard Ginori manufactory, impossible to display because of their vastness, which testify to the Savoy court’s need, on the heels of theUnification of Italy, to equip the new residences and seats of the court in Italy with adequate tableware.
