On Thursday, May 23, Shazar Gallery in Naples presents Dream scape from river, a solo exhibition by Sudanese artist Mutaz Elemam. The painter, who lives and works in Cairo, has to his credit the participation in countless exhibitions in New York, Miami, UAE, Egypt, Lebanon, Qatar, Kuwait, Sudan, Biennials, such as the one in Beijing, and International Symposia, but this is the first time that a solo exhibition of his work has been organized in Europe. Mutaz Elemam’s exhibition at Shazar Gallery is therefore a unique and unrepeatable event and is part of the new programming of the Neapolitan space that will see the gallery’s stable of international artists thicken.
Infatuated with the majestic beauty of the Nile, Mutaz Elemam has developed over the years a visual repertoire that expands toward abstractionism with broad liquid brushstrokes, illuminated by light touches that accentuate the depth and a palette that captures the spirit of the river landscape. The Sudanese artist’s painting speaks of dormant beauty, of the slow flow of the river as it traverses the Dark Continent, reproposing its colors and contradictions, a vision that is also a way of painting, at once modern and ancient. In the series presented for the occasion, Dream scape from river, green, brown and blue backgrounds reconstruct the corners of the vegetation without omitting its details, nullifying the separation between sky, water and earth and declining with each vision a personal interpretation of the river. The stylistic color solutions that accompany the stories mark the reflection and inner understanding that the artist finds in each of his works, giving life to the thousands of shades and spots with a contemporary rendering yet rooted in African culture
