Aron Demetz (Sterzing, 1972), one of the most appreciated contemporary sculptors working on wood, is the protagonist of a unique solo exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples, from June 7 to July 29, 2018: Autarchy, this is the title of the exhibition curated by Alessandro Romanini, presents the public with a selection of sculptures of various sizes and materials expressly made for the museum spaces and directly inspired by the Farnese and Egyptian collections of the Neapolitan museum. Demetz’s sculptures exhibited in Naples, the presentation reads, “follow dynamic and postural settings that interact with the classical archetype, fitting seamlessly into the magical setting of the MANN.”
The title Autarchy thus refers to “a kind of code of self-regulation in the process of personal realization involving the two subjects of artistic creation: the author and the material he shapes.” According to Demetz, in fact, the artist must literally “listen” to the material to be forged, grasping its interaction with the creativeinput: the artist manipulates the material on the basis of its characteristics and establishing with the material a dense dialogue that is always original and unpredictable.
“The MANN,” says its director, Paolo Giulierini, “is a cultural institution that observes, with curiosity, the most avant-garde trends in contemporary art: programming Demetz’s exhibition at the Museum meant meeting one of the most interesting profiles on the international scene.”
“Exhibiting at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples,” says Aron Demetz, on the other hand, “was like accepting a challenge, because the sculptures could have been scaled down compared to the extraordinary collections of the MANN: on the contrary, the link between past and present revealed a legible continuity between the sensibilities of yesterday and today.”
The exhibition will be scattered in different spaces of the Muse (tr including the atrium, the gardens, the rooms behind the Ercole Farnese, and the Meridiana), has been realized with the support and patronage of the Region of Tuscany and the Region of Trentino Alto Adige. It can be visited during MANN’s opening hours: daily, except Tuesdays, from 9 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tickets: full 12 euros, reduced 6 euros. Free for under 18s, 18app holders, for everyone on the first Sunday of the month. Ticket can also be purchased by reservation with presale fee (2 euros). Information is available at the website of the National Archaeological Museum of Naples.
