Enrico Caruso - From Naples to New York is the title of the current exhibition at the National Archaeological Museum in Naples until April 22. The event, which celebrates the centenary of the death of Enrico Caruso (Naples, 1873 - 1921) is curated by Giuliana Muscio, a scholar of the Neapolitan tenor and, more generally, of the contribution of Italian artists to the American entertainment world.
The exhibition, which benefits from the musical consultancy of Simona Frasca, musicologist and professor at theUniversity of Naples Federico II, aims to focus with a new look on the figure of Caruso, the first modern media star and representative of Italian emigration, capable of preserving and innovating the traditions of show business with a significant impact on the U.S. media.
The exhibition is produced by Fondazione Campania dei Festival and Fondazione Film Commission Regione Campania, with the support of Regione Campania and in collaboration with MANN and theIstituto Centrale per i Beni Sonori ed Audiovisivi. The narrative itinerary on Enrico Caruso and his career is based on the richest documentation ever: a characteristic of the tour itinerary is to propose a rigorous approach from a historical point of view and an intermediate one from the communicative aspect.
The exhibition features more than 250 photographic images, from the Metropolitan Opera Archive in New York, the Caruso Collection at the Peabody Institute(Johns Hopkins) in Baltimore, and the Enrico Caruso Museum at Villa Bellosguardo in Lastra a Signa. It is possible to find on display not only vintage audiovisual material and newsreels, provided for the occasion by the American archives and the Ansaldo Foundation’s Setti Fund, but also original audio recordings of the record production of the most famous tenor of all time.
As part of the exhibition there will be a screening of the documentary Enrico Caruso: The Greatest Singer in the World, directed by Giuliana Muscio and produced by the Directorate General for Italians Abroad of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The work, through previously unseen materials, recounts Caruso’s American career and the modernity of his relationship with the media, emphasizing the fundamental contribution of Italian performers in the development of the entertainment industry in the United States. Three daily screenings are scheduled: at 12 p.m., 4 p.m. and 6 p.m.
The exhibition catalog, published by "east of the equator," can be purchased at the MANN bookshop.
