On view at the Reitberg Museum in Zurich from September 6 to November 4, 2018, is the exhibition Rosetsu. Fantastic Imagery from Japan, showcasing the works of artist Nagasawa Rosetsu (1754 - 1799), best known for the monumental tiger painted in 1786 on the sliding door of the MuryÅji Zen temple, along with the dragon on the opposite side (legend has it that he succeeded in the feat in a single night). This is the first time that Rosetsu’s works have left Japan: impressive wall paintings as well as large masterpieces including images full of wit and humor, conducted with masterful brushstrokes or simple fingers, as well as delicate and elegant compositions with fine brushes and vivid colors, are exhibited in Zurich.
Nagasawa Rosetsu is regarded as one of Japan’s most eccentric and innovative early pre-modern artists: during his short career he produced numerous paintings that remain unforgettable for their visionary character. Rosetsu’s works, characterized by originality, great flair and visual appeal, elude any classification. In the course of his relatively short career he was able to simultaneously execute different painting techniques in a wide variety of formats and frequently change his style. The exhibition Rosetsu. Fantastic Imagery from Japan allows a glimpse into the fascinating work of this unconventional artist.
Info on the exhibition can be had by visiting the Rietberg Museum website.
