Musée Marmottan celebrates the sun in art history for the 150th anniversary of Monet's masterpiece


The Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris celebrates with a major exhibition the 150th anniversary of the creation of Monet's masterpiece that began Impressionism. One hundred works trace the history of the depiction of the sun in the arts.

From Sept. 21, 2022 to Jan. 29, 2023, the Musée Marmottan Monet will celebrate with a major exhibition the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the creation of one of the most celebrated masterpieces in its collection, Impression, soleil levant, which Claude Monet painted in November 1872 and a work to which we owe the birth ofImpressionism.

The exhibition entitled Face au soleil. Un astre dans les arts will offer paintings by many artists to the public for the occasion: Albrecht Dürer, Luca Giordano, Pieter Paul Rubens, Claude Gellée known as “Le Lorrain,” Joseph Vernet, William Turner, Caspar David Friedrich, Gustave Courbet, Eugène Boudin, Camille Pissarro, Paul Signac, André Derain, Maurice Denis , Félix Vallotton, Edvard Munch, Otto Dix, Otto Freundlich, Sonia Delaunay, Vladimir Baranov-Rossiné, Joan Miró, Alexandre Calder, Gérard Fromanger, Vicky Colombet and many others.



Through about a hundred works from more than fifty lending institutions it is intended to trace the history of the depiction of the sun in the arts from antiquity to the present day. Drawings, paintings, photographs, and measuring instruments from the Paris Observatory illustrate developments in astronomy throughout the centuries and highlight the evolution of landscape painting.

The exhibition is curated by Marianne Mathieu, scientific director of the Musée Marmottan Monet in Paris, and Michael Philipp, curator of the Barberini Museum in Potsdam.
