Murano Glass Museum pays a grand tribute to Livio Seguso

Through April 12, 2020, the Murano Glass Museum offers a grand tribute to Livio Seguso, Murano master of contemporary glass.

Through April 12, 2020, an exhibition paying tribute to Livio Seguso (Murano, 1930), a great Murano master of contemporary glass, is on view at the Murano Glass Museum.

The exhibition, titled Livio Seguso. In principio era la goccia (In the beginning was the drop), presents the works of the internationally renowned artist: masterpieces that testify to his extremely high creative quality, in which glass dialogues with other materials in innovative ways.

Seguso has been a pioneer, since the 1970s, in the use of glass as an expressive medium for art and still continues his activity with new proposals; he started working with glass very early, fascinated by the inexhaustible enchantment of this material.

He participated in the 36th Venice Biennial in 1972, but his artistic production reached its peak toward the end of the decade, abandoning all heritage of the Murano tradition to devote himself only to pure crystal. His works are images of light that become almost dreamlike forms; later, he added other materials to glass, such as steel, stone, marble and granite, and finally wood.

To date he has participated in one hundred and fifty exhibitions in Italy and around the world, including solo and group shows, including the 42nd Venice Biennale in 1986 and at Arte Laguna in 1995. His most significant solo exhibitions include Ca’ Pesaro-International Gallery of Modern Art in 1980, Palazzo Ducale in Mantua in 1981, the Castello Sforzesco in Milan in 1982, the National Gallery in Prague in 1984, the Casa dei Carraresi in Treviso in 2007, the National Museum of History in Taiwan in 2008, and the major exhibition in 2014 at the Ukai Museum in Hakone, Tokyo, where he presented unpublished sculptures, paintings and drawings. In 2015 Livio Seguso received the “Glass in Venice” Lifetime Achievement Award from the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia and the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere e Arti.

The exhibition is curated by Chiara Squarcina.
