Munch masterpieces from Morgan Stanley collection on display at Courtauld Gallery

The Courtauld Gallery in London is hosting Edvard Munch masterpieces from one of the world's most important collections of the artist, the Morgan Stanley collection, until September 4, 2022.

Through September 4, 2022, the Courtauld Gallery in London is hosting a major collection of works by Edvard Munch, the Morgan Stanley collection, for the first time in the United Kingdom. The exhibition entitled The Morgan Stanley Collection: Edvard Munch. Masterpieces from Bergen is made possible thanks to a collaboration between the Courtauld Gallery and KODE Art Museums in Bergen, the latter museums that hold one of the world’s most significant Munch collections, originally assembled by Norwegian industrialist Rasmus Meyer in the early 1900s.

Some eighteen paintings from this collection are on view on this occasion; this is the first time that a substantial number of works from the Morgan Stanley collection have left Norway. The exhibition kicks off with early examples from Munch’s realist period in the 1880s; these include Morning (1884) and Summer Night (1889). Works that laid the groundwork for the highly expressive paintings of the 1890s, including the famous Frieze of Life series dealing with profound themes of human existence, such as Evening on Karl Johan Avenue (1892), Melancholy (1894-96) and At the Deathbed (1895).

The Courtauld Gallery’s permanent collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist masterpieces will also provide a rich context for the exhibition, revealing some of Munch’s artistic inspirations during his experimental years in Paris from 1889 to 1892, when he became acquainted with the modern styles of Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and Van Gogh.

The exhibition is accompanied by an illustrated catalog with contributions from experts at KODE Art Museums and the Courtauld Gallery. This exhibition is sponsored by Morgan Stanley and supported by the AKO Foundation, with additional support from The Huo Family Foundation.
