Mountains as seen by Magnum photographers: from Capa to Morath, Scianna to McCurry

Opening July 17, 2019 at the Fortress of Bard is the Mountains by Magnum Photographers exhibition, open to the public until January 6, 2020.

Co-produced by Forte di Bard and Magnum Photos Paris, the exhibition will present the mountains as experienced and photographed by the greatest photographers of theMagnum Photos Agency, such as Werner Bischof, Robert Capa, George Rodger, Inge Morath, Herbert List, Ferdinando Scianna, Martin Parr, and Steve McCurry. A journey through more than 130 images to understand the historical development of the representation of the mountain environment in various aspects addressed by different photographers.

During the 19th century, thanks to the spread of mountaineering, photographers began to document ascents to peaks through the first documents on the conquest of hitherto unexplored mountains. Through photographs there was a way to travel. The first photographic expeditions to the Alps began in the 1850s: mountaineering photographers were aided by porters who carried their bulky equipment, but with their images they amazed the public, who had never seen mountain peaks up close.

The photographers of the Magnum Agency reinvented theiconography of mountains: in their shots one observes and traverses mountains; one sees people who spend their existence at high altitudes or are in search of spiritual guidance or shelter.

In addition, a section will be devoted to a project by Paolo Pellegrin dedicated to the Aosta Valley; to bring his shots to life, Pellegrin, an internationally renowned photographer and winner of ten World Press Photo Awards, went in search of the most striking lights: those filtered by clouds, those reflected on snow, rocks or frozen lakes.
