From November 16, 2019 to April 19, 2020, Mountains and Parks, a solo exhibition dedicated to Olivo Barbieri (Carpi, 1954), one of the leading contemporary photographers, will be on view at the Saint-Bénin Center in Aosta.
Curated by Alberto Fiz, the exhibition will present more than fifty works, including an unpublished series of large images on the mountains of the Aosta Valley made especially for this occasion. The works will cover about twenty years of his production, from 2002 to 2019, highlighting his main themes related to landscape andenvironment. Also on display for the first time will be three impressive sculptures that will be placed in the central wing of the exhibition venue; as well as images dedicated to the history of ancient and modern art and a video made in China in 2006.
For this solo exhibition, Olivo Barbieri investigates natural parks, the Alps, the Dolomites, as well as the most famous waterfalls on the planet, focusing on pressing issues such as the need for a renewed natural balance associated with mass tourism.
In addition to ice and water parks, he analyzes Landfills, or the four large dumpsites inhabited by thousands of people and animals in Southeast Asia in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia: theme parks in negative.
His images seen from above, taken with the technique of selective focus, ushered in a new way of perceiving the landscape: they are images born not out of a desire for special effects, but out of a curiosity to test the behavior of the photographic medium under unsuitable conditions.
This technique is also extended to art history, changing the perception of works with an ironic and irreverent attitude.
In contrast, the large wooden sculptures exhibited for the first time refer back to tribe members, bringing out a wandering geography that creates a secret landscape. In the video Seascape #1 Night, China Shenzen 05, an entire generation of Chinese is about to indulge in mass entertainment: bathing in the sea by moonlight.
